The Royal Hotel is a gem amongst the big corporate hotels. The owner/operator has made her little hotel stand out by creating a homey, family atmosphere. The hotel is dog friendly, and Rango, a miniature poodle, is the first to greet you. The owner is an avid painter, and her artwork hangs throughout the hotel. Guests are encouraged to paint with the owner in the dining area. Paint, brushes, and canvas are supplied by the owner. You never know who will show up in the hotel lobby, a multi-linguist, a local musician, a miner, even the great aunt (former owner of the hotel) of the current owner dropped in for a visit. The hotel is located near the waterfront with good restaurants nearby. There is parking on the premises.

It's a woman owned business. The hotel is over 140 years old, and the owner/operator has tried to maintain the charm of an old hotel. Every room has an eclectic assortment of antiques. The bedrooms have very comfortable mattresses and pillows. All of the walls are adorned with her paintings. The owner and I painted canvases over an antique dining table while sipping gin mixers. The place feels like a home. The hotel is downtown near the water, parks, and good eating spots.

The property reminded me of a boutique Parisien hotel with all the lovely art, period furniture in the lobby/hotel entrance and in the rooms. And the rooms are well appointed, impeccably clean, and thoughtfully furnished. The proprietor is simply delightful - warm, welcoming and clearly has a creative bent which is evident in the changes and upgrades she has made since she purchased the historic hotel almost 18 mths ago.

We loved talking with the family members and even the handyman who is helping with upgrades and improvements. Breakfast was simple but the coffee was excellent, albeit slow to appear. We sat in the comfortable living room and chatted over coffee. We were a stone's throw from the wharf, marina, Largest Fiddle, and a great restaurant - Gov's - that was recommended.

Lovely hotel had a wonderful relaxing stay. Great location right downtown. walked to the boardwalk on the waterfront and historic site’s and restaurants and entertainment. The room was very clean and a luxurious feeling, the bed was very comfortable. Booked with booking.com paid exactly as was booked.
